There is some freedom, it just takes some effort, and a willingness to do thing outside what's "normal" or "essential to modern life". Try looking into things like "hoppy electronics", "urban hacking", and "art". Although, you should consider using Garry's Mod if you really want play around.

My life goal is to save enough to buy land in the middle of nowhere in the mountains, write an extensive manifesto, and listen to johannes brahms on volume 11 repeatedly for the rest of eternity.
I will also hunt and eat bear.

As a Youth I remember wondering WTF was with the pencils-and-graph paper RPG Traveller. Your character spent 50 years just getting enough experience to START playing the game. Decades later, I realize that this has been the story of my life. No time to reproduce or go to a movie, just extreme geeking for years and years, without the pay and status my parents had attained by the time they were 30.
Silent-generation journalist and questioner Bill Moyers said (and was assaulted for telling something like the truth) "The Rich declared class war, and the Rich won." It seems to me this has a lot to do with how the suckage got into your life.
