So how many have exams coming up? I have a functional analysis on Wednesday and topics in biomedical mathematics ( only did this cos i was getting consistently bad marks on algebra topics and it was the only other option i had prerequisites for).

How are your preparations going? Best of luck.

I just had a general relativity final last Friday.  I have a bio final in 7.5 hrs, and a statistical mechanics final on Thursday.

statistical mechanics? wtf is that, i thought all mechanics was determined a priori.

I had exams a week ago.  Did horrible on complex analysis (haven't even looked at my grade yet), but alright on the rest.

i could imagine it has something to do with figuring out the statistics of mechanicl stuff making errors. if this machine has these different processes which lead to this product, how often will the product be a failure and how often will the machine break down.... maybe? >>2 please to explain!

Statistical    mechanics deals with stuff where you had a large amount of particles (like atoms in a gas).  The sheer number of particles makes it impossible to analyze the system as something like "a million initial states evolving simultaneously".  Instead you study the system through macroscopic quantitiesblike pressure and temperature.  Macroscopic quantities can be viewed as statistical averages of small contributions from each of the little particles.
The validity of always taking the average is justified because you have zillions of particles; with so many particles it is highly unlikely for a system to randomly deviate far from the average.

I had complex analysis last semester. It went ok. What kind of questions did you get asked?

Um.. complex analysis type questions :)  The questions that I had trouble with were actually just the things involving the standard theory, like showing a function is constant or that it is injective.  What made those problems hard was that in the problem what we were given about the function was obscure and not what you are used to working with.

lol whenever i hear constant i think liouville or picard. oh well, i sure your exam didn't go too bad.

I had my complex analysis final last Thursday. I think it went pretty well, except for the last question. We had to find an explicit solution for the Poisson integral, and I couldn't figure out how to evaluate an integral from negative infinity to infinity involving a completely unknown function.

Wasn't too bad other than that though. Some conformal mappings and contour integration mostly. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be.

Had the 4.30 PM/ 9AM combo on Friday/Saturday

Was glad I could chill out to doctor who that evening.

Still have coursework and one more exam, a thousand curses be on the designers of my course!
