Principia Mathematica

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-05 16:57 ID:qVrIvV9O

I just started reading The Principia by Isaac Newton (translated by Andrew Motte).

Is there anything that helps understand the uncomfortable wording? The concepts otherwise don't seem that hard too follow, he just talks like he's putting as much information as possible into ever sentence.

Is there anything else I should know?

It says it was published in 1995, so I doubt there is a "better" translation. Basically I'm hoping there is some sort of study guide or something.

I can read it, but when following along with the math it seems worded in an unnatural manner.

Here is an incomplete online version so you can see what i mean.

That's just how they wrote back then. To them reading was supposed to be like having a flowery discussion.

Shitty translation:

Yes, that's the one I meant. They are both often referred to as simply Principia Mathematica though. Newton did the physics derived using calculus, and Russel wrote one with Whitehead on mathematical logic systems (unless I'm mistaken).

It's more of a physics book with a lot of geometric proofs. Either way, most math/physics books nowadays are written to teach a large number of people a number of formulas (memorized by rote learning) so that they can just get through the class.

Newton is revered for his way of thinking of things. I'm reading the Principia more as a mental and cognitive exercise (I'm trying to follow each of his proofs and try and think of why he did what he did) rather than to learn the physics or math (I already know calculus, and have taken a handful of classes dealing with Newtonian physics).
