What IF: time travel

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-25 15:07

People say you cant go back in time because if you can then we would see space travelers traveling back in time to visit us. Well... what if.. WHAT IF: we didn't travel back to the past because we didn't want to change the past which would later change the future. So in the future the scientists mke an agreement that they'll never travel into the past because they do not want to disturb anything.

Outlaws and anarchists.

it would only take one idiot to go back and fuck things up
very probable, if  u think about all the men that will have lived trouout those years

Never would happen. You're assuming an unrealistically ideal model of a scientist.

You'd never get anyone to agree to never go back in time.

a time traveler got japan to attack the us

What if instead of going back into the past and changing the future, they just created a new branch/alternate universe.

If time travel was possible, any dumbass who just went back in time probably died unless the exact position of the earth was determined before the time jump was made. In essence, the only real places where you can travel in time are the periods of time where the earth's current position.

If you're so much as off by a fraction you'll end up with a foot in the ground or even worse. My idea is eventually we'll master time travel, but at that point we will have stopped caring so much about it.

YOU ARE ALL ASSUMING TIME TRAVEL IS POSSIBLE

PROTIP: IT ISN'T

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-28 23:50

Time travel is really interesting since it can create many paradoxes. Mathematically unable to be proven however is the ability for physical matter to disappear from the universe. Since the universe is a constant, at all times, being able to remove and add matter to it via time travel would mean that all our scientific and mathematic truths would have to be reevaluated.

YOU ARE MAKING THE SAME STUPID FUCKING MISTAKE

IF IT CREATES PARADOXES AND VIOLATES LAWS AS SIMPLE AS MASS-ENERGY CONSERVATION, THE SOUND CONCLUSION IS THAT IT AS WE THINK ABOUT IT PROBABLY CANNOT EXIST, NOT THAT THERE ARE GAPS IN PERFECTLY SOUND SCIENCE

If you could travel back in time, it is very well possible to prevent your parents from ever meeting or even prevent you from traveling back in time. This is called a time paradox, and in theory it can destroy the universe.

You're assuming a mass/energy imbalance. That isn't always the case. We could send something, theoretically, back in time into a preconstructed "shell" of the same mass of what we're hoping to send back. The physical form in the current timeline could jump in and out of existence in an infinitely small timeframe while existing in the past timeline for a much longer timeframe.

Ignoring that YOU ARE AGAIN ASSUMING IT IS POSSIBLE, you are also assuming that the Universe gives two shits if the perceived succession of events as evaluted by you is chronologically consistent, and that some force wants to make it so if not.

Also, where did you pull this bullshit about destroying the Universe? God doesn't know what to do, so he just fire-and-brimstones the whole fucking thing?

What the hell?

PEOPLE FROM THE FUTURE ARE LUFFING AT YOU RIGHT NOW!!

The earth is moving. Good point. But you forget that there are no fix points in the universe at all. The solar system is moving around the galactic center (i suppose... or around something else which is moving around the galactic center), the galaxy is movin around inside a some galaxy cluster which is again part of an even bigger cluster and so on. The universal space itself is changing making absolute positioning in great scales impossible.
If time travelling was possible (and i really don't think it is) you would therefore be forced also to travel through space and don't "jump" like you did if you had a flux compensator-ized Delorian.
The possibility of time travelling doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be able to develop it or even travel back in a time before... right now. Maybe all time travellers decide or are forced by physical or technical limitations to travel back only into a time after - let's say - the year 2013. The lack of time travellers doesn't prove anything. There are far better assumptions why time travel is impossible.

If you paid any attention to Terminator's 1-3...you'd know that it's not possible to change the future. I mean, think about it... If they had stopped the rise of the machines, would there have been a Terminator sent back in time at all? NOPE.

Follow logic: Terminators are sent back in time to change the future. If they are put in our present, it is their past. If they succeeded, then their present (our future) would never have existed in the first place. So it makes sense to say that whatever they try to do, being sent to their past changes nothing.

I figure at this point, if there was some way of making a change, you'd get a time paradox, which I don't know too much about.

No fucking way.

I am somebody in the future, and I can tell you that you have no idea of our society (well, your future society) works. All I gotta say.

If you paid attention to Terminator 2 and 3 you'd have noticed that they actually DID alter the timeline, but couldn't change it in a way which would have prevented certain key events in history. According to the chaos theory the later future will nevertheless be changed.

Don't change these.
