A question about optics and ranges...

How can I use the law of squares to determine how far away a man is by how big he appears to me? Say he is 2m tall, and he appears to me to be 1m tall. .5m? .25m?

unfortunately eye visuals do not operate after any standard units. If you want to know how things appear at different distances you'd better get a ruler and start doing various measurements yourself.

You're going to need to find your own measurements for size scaling.

It's not hard. Take some swim goggles or eye pieces, affix a sturdy measuring guide to it, a couple inches out, and take some height measurements. Do it at a couple different distances. You should get a constant ratio of distance to scale difference.

Don't change these.
