Will somebody please for the love of almighty christ explain transforms for me? I have experience in basic calculus and related concepts (limits, functions). Particulary I want to understand what to do with the complex results that arise from the Fourier Transform, and how I can use the numbers to discover the frequency content of a time-domain waveform.

a transform is a representation of a function f:X->Y with a complete set of orthogonal functions that span L^2(X;C)*Y. i.e. you turn a function into a point in an infinite dimensional unitary function space.
