If 1/0 = infinity, then infinity x 0 = 1.

2 x 0 = 3 x 0
(2 x 0) x infinity = (3 x 0) x infinity
2 x (0 x infinity) = 3 x (0 x infinity)
2 x 1 = 3 x 1
2 = 3

so 1/0 cannot equal infinity.

Infinity is not a variable or concrete number, it is a mathematical concept; you cannot just shove it into a simple algebraic equation.  Doing that is like me saying:

2 x 0 = 3 x 0
(2 x 0) x human soul = (3 x 0) x human soul
2 x (0 x human soul) = 3 x (0 x human soul)
2 x 1 = 3 x 1
2 = 3

so 1/0 cannot equal human soul.

How about a real answer?

One definition of division is like so:

x/y = z iff z * y = x

If y = 0 and x != 0, then there is no z which will ever satisfy this.
If y = 0 and x = 0, then ANY z will satisfy this. Since this is not a very useful property, we constrain this to be illegal (if you want to reason about this sort of thing, you use limits and just talk about behavior where both sides are approaching zero or what-have-you).
