WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!! THE EARTH WILL BE SWALLOWED UP INTO A BLACK HOLE IN A NANO SECOND, ALL OF HUMAN CIVILISATION, ALL SENTIENT LIFE, HELL EVEN THE SUN AND THE VOYAGER PROBE WILL GET SUCKED INTO IT

Either that or a resonance cascade.

Discuss.

The probability of black hole forming in CERN that could destroy the earth is approx. 1/10^40.

The physicists are just trying to create a little more media attention about this project.

SO THERE'S A CHANCE?? Just imagine that. Everyone on earth going about their lives then suddenly FWOOP we die before we realise it.

anything devidedby zero is undefined you fucktards

also why do they talkabout "mini blackholes"? its a singularity, it has no mass ffs.

x/0=infinity

Black holes release an amount of energy, then become unstable and collapse releasing more energy. Black holes which are approximately 30 kms in diameter or more last 10^50 years etc.. and these are the blackholes you are familiar with that occur when a neutron star goes supernova. Smaller black holes, such as those created when 2 neutrons are smacked together in a particle accelerator, become unstable virtually instantly and release a load of energy. They're not sure what happens or why this is, that's why scientists enjoy smacking neutrons together in particle accelerators.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-18 16:39

>>17
infinte 0s fit into x, therefore x/0 = infinity

also 0 isn't a real number

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-18 18:41

>>18

If 1/0 = infinity, then infinity x 0 = 1.

2 x 0 = 3 x 0
(2 x 0) x infinity = (3 x 0) x infinity
2 x (0 x infinity) = 3 x (0 x infinity)
2 x 1 = 3 x 1
2 = 3

so 1/0 cannot equal infinity.

Reals are a field. Can't be a field without an additive identity. So, 0 is a real number. Stop failing.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-18 20:06

OMG DIVISION BY ZERO

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-18 21:32

The anime Noein already addressed this issue. In the case of a universal DivByZero error, people from an alternate timespace will appear and angst until the scientists get all depressed and unmotivated, halting the experiment.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-18 22:54

will we feel it?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-19 4:38

Will we feel the weight of the entire universe bear upon every fibre of our being, ripping, crushing, and distorting us with immense acceleration to a common collision point smaller than a pea?

I don't know.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-19 5:29

We will die before we have a chance to feel anything, the distortion of our nervous system and brains will occur at nearly the speed of light.

Yes I know. You are admitting there is nothing to suggest 0 is a real number. That is very honourable of you, especially when posting as anonymous when you can continue to troll against what is so obviously and irrefutable fact without humiliation.

Reals are scalar (1 dimension), 0 is the first and only component of 0 dimensional space. Saying 0 is a real number is like saying 5 is a coordinate.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-19 10:46 (sage)

like saying 5 is a complex number (which it is).
fixed.

Not if we make a black hole. If we make a black hole (and it doesn't decay), gravity will send it careening towards the center of the earth, eating everything in its path; it will oscillate back and forth through the earth, carving away as the earth slowly crumbles to pieces. At some point we fall in the cracks and get either crushed by rubble or torn apart by tidal forces at the event horizon.

Remember that a black hole only sucks due to gravity; even if it eats the entire earth, it's only sucking us in as fast as the earth was in the first place. What's more is due to the shell theorems, orbital satellites would continue to behave normally as though the earth were never destroyed. In other words, if this were to happen, it would look TOTALLY awesome from the international space station. afk/space/

What the fuck? 0 is a real number BY DEFINITION. It's not a matter of proof. Stop trolling.

Saying 0 is a real number is like saying 5 is a coordinate.
5 is a coordinate in 1-D space. Fail.

(From Mathworld:)
"The field of all rational and irrational  numbers is called the real numbers" <- 0 = 0/1 is a rational, and thus a real.

(From Wikipedia:)
"The discovery of more rigorous definitions of the real numbers was one of the most important developments of 19th century mathematics. Definitions in use today include equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences of rational numbers;" <- 0 is a rational number, the sequence {0, 0, 0, ...} is a Cauchy sequence in the rational numbers, and thus a real.

"Dedekind cuts;" <- Let A = {a in Q : a < 0}, B = {b in Q : b > 0}. This represents 0 as a real number.

"a more sophisticated version of "decimal representation";" <- 0.0000... is a perfectly acceptable decimal representation.

"and an axiomatic definition of the real numbers as the unique complete Archimedean ordered field." <- Field implies it has an additive identity (0), and complete implies that all Cauchy sequences are convergent ({1, 1/2, 1/3, ...} is Cauchy and thus converges to an element in the real numbers).

How is there nothing to suggest zero is a real number? The reverse must (at least) also hold true.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-25 22:35

You guys are idiots, numbers don't exist.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-27 3:13 (sage)

Numbers don't physically exist, but they exist. Obviously. If they didn't, how do we use them everyday?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-27 21:21

0/0 = 0, due to no 0s (or anything) in 0
anything else = "undetermined". Think programming and the state of null compared to 0. x/0 = null

I'm aware of that, but if you (incorrectly) think that 1/0 = infinity, then simply multiplying through by 0 gives you infinify x 0 = 1.

So yes, the foolishness can be spotted at this stage.
