Rational ways to increase will power.

Name: Chocolate_Potato !fEOFppCLDQ 2006-09-14 6:41

Hello.

Backdrop.
Long story short I am a philosophical genius and have come to a dead end as I am intelligent, but lack experience.

Prelude.
Thinking an idea is not enough to enact it. You need to psychologically condition yourself in that idea in order to use it, like a person would condition themselves to overcome their fear of spiders or a recruit would be trained to obey the orders of his sergeant. There are 100s of instances in your life when you made a mistake and think back to your parents warning you not to make that mistake. The next paragraph is called theory, don't let any petty foibles get in the way of reading this please. For instance when I say that science is based on a dogma, I am not an extremist claiming there is something wrong with science, I am saying that the need for proof is the core idea that science is formed from. I have one agenda, which is to accertain the truth.

Theory.
Dogmas are generally associated with religion. The definition in the past however was more extensive and coverred everything from superstition to core philosophical dogmas such as the belief that you need proof to justify believing in something. Generally people do not restrict dogmas to important dogmas like science, for 2 reasons

1: There is nothing stopping them.
2: They need a purpose.

This unrestricted creation of dogmas resulted in ideas that were simply incorrect and forms of reasonning that do not work. 200 years ago Kant explained that in order for a dogma to be considerred valid it..

1: Should be judged by it's effects.
2: Must not contradict other valid dogmas.

These 2 restrictions are the general basis for all criticism of dogma, you do use them even if you are not aware of them.. For instance you may point out that a dogma contradicts with the "you need proof to justify believing in things" dogma, in a more concise manner of course by stating that a person's idea cannot be proven. A person's purpose is a dogma, for the most part it is instinctive, gaining pleasure, avoiding pain etc.. However people, including myself, generate 100s of dogmas which they can follow unquestionningly, bear in mind such dogmas rarely obey Kant's 2 restrictions, which leads back to the point made in the backdrop and the conclusion...

Conclusion.
I set myself the task of creating dogmas which follow Kant's restrictions and succeeded, however I am having difficulty over-riding my instinct and conditionning myself to follow them. When I succeed it usually involves the use of dogmas which do not follow Kant's restrictions and I have developped the idea that irrational dogmas can be used temporarily for their effects if I ignore the dogmas they contradict, temporarily. However this leads to madness and irrational behaviour. It is obvious I should use my congruent set of dogmas, which I believe requires me to condition myself.

So /sci/, how do I condition myself? Let's have some ideas, treat this like a post on /b/ when somoene asks you to post something and he will jerk off over the 10th thing posted. I will do it, I'm desperate for answers.

"I have developped the idea that irrational dogmas can be used temporarily for their effects if I ignore the dogmas they contradict, temporarily"

That's how it's been done.

Artificially create situations that require judgement based on your chosen dogmas, and repeat them until your automatic response is that which would be proper for that dogma?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-14 10:49

>>5
Thanks I will try that.

>>3
The problem is it leads to poor judgement.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-14 14:41

That's what happens. Poor judgement is a side effect.

Do a barrel roll!

I know. How about I find a way to increase will power without it affecting my judgement?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-15 6:51

What are you willing?

Judgement should be based on logic, willpower comes from emotion, emotions cloud our judgement. This is why noone is perfect in action. The best you can do is focus your emotions on devotion to folllowing your dogma, and not get distracted.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-15 10:38

WHY DON'T YOU JUST EXPLAIN THE DOGMA TO US ALREADY

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-15 13:43

I want to write a book and get the credit I deserve for coming up with the idea first. In fact I haven't even written it down anywhere so if I die it may well be 100s of years before somone as great as me is born, raised, thinks of it and tells the world.

Just find a good publisher

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-16 13:07

K so I tried that idea out and it worked, however initialisation will be a problem when there is the prospect of greater physical discomfort. Unless of course I use an irrational dogma to make physical discomfort irrelevant, but that leads to insanity.

Study Buddhism. Learn that life is full of suffering, and suffering is caused by desire, so the elimination of desire is the key to ending suffering. How do you eliminate desire? You don't because you just asked how to eliminate suffering, which is rooted in desire, which causes suffering. Therefore, don't care about anything.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-17 1:57

>>16
Sorry but I have to deem that as false.

Desire = what you deem could generate pleasure and prevent suffering
Sufferring is not necessarily caused by desire. The elimination of desire is not necessarily the key to ending sufferring.

Desiring the impossible or unlikely may however cause mild emotional pain.

"How do you eliminate desire?"

You be reasonable and do not waste time attempting to avoid or achieve the impossible.

"Therefore, don't care about anything."
If you do this then you will be incapable of postulating the best course of action through contemplating desires, which will result in impaired judgement which almost always causes unecessary sufferring and loss of pleasure.

?

I think what >>10,27,29 wants to know is why are you exercising your will power in the first place. You can't just use will power, there has to be a reason. Like quitting smoking cold turkey, for example.

I have a feeling that this thread sucks horribly, but I don't care enough to read the OP.

So how do I accentuate some reason over others. For example putting the reason of the house needs cleaning over the reason of sipping beer and watching TV would give me more pleasure.

It may well be logical to clean the house, but I will act illogically because of the pleasure gained. The obvious course to take would be to induce temporary insanity which I can do, but another way would be prefeable. Perhaps a method in which I can induce insanity without it affected my ability to reason. I would be "insane", but I would still understand the nature of my situation.

The method would need to be a way of logically inducing the best dogma needed to solve the situation that is congruent with reality.

Discuss further.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-27 17:47

Will power is excercised as you condition yourself to do something exceptionally difficult. The examples you provide do not take will power to accomplish, unless you have some sort of house cleaning or beer sipping phobia.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-29 6:22

I was talking about minor examples.

Practice, practice, practice. It really is just that simple.

Anyone can condition themselves to a routine to make their work and everyday lives easier. The trouble is reality is so complex I cannot condition myself to face all situations and even if I managed to do so I would be faced with situations I could not have possibly predicted. I need a universal method of conditionning myself so that I can face all situations regardless of their content. I have already discussed the major ideas concerning this endeavour.

I am already capable of using my brain, but this isn't the entire issue. How I use my brain is also important.

I hate to say it, but willpower is just that: Willpower. It is the power of your will. If you can will it, you will. If you can't, you can't. The only way to augment (notice that I did not say increase) it is to introduce yourself to the dogmatic situations and find the ways in which you can best adapt to or otherwise deal with them. In this way, the unexpected will not seem as unfamiliar, surprising, or foreboding.

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-02 12:12

Just keep trying different dogmas that you normally wouldn't. The different perspectives will allow you to distance yourself from being too trapped in one set of values. Things become more objective. Though to act the part you need to convince yourself you believe something or it will show as fake on the outside. Take some classes you normally wouldn't, join some groups you normally wouldn't, work at jobs you normally wouldn't, and read books you normally wouldn't.

Perhaps you had that, not everyone else did. I for one was usually the correct one and had no instances of forewarning, what few there were that I didn't already account for...
The rest of your shit, is tl;dr annoying.
The topic "Rational ways to increase will power." Just stop being a pussy.
