How to make airship?

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-30 15:28

I'm thinking of the one in Tale Spin, a battlecruiser sized aircraft that can sustain flight.  Some helium tanks may be needed        inside the craft, protected enough not to suddenly burst or catch flame.  And propellers might help.

If it was made of fabrics or light materials yeah it would be possible (been too long since I've seen Tale Spin)

The only way helium tanks would work is if your airship is weak and fragile. Usually, with metal ships, the space you could fill up with helium could be put to much better use holding fuel or engines. Still, it would work if your ship was very light (and had a very high of helium -> passenger space ratio).

One thing that might help is to have vacuum chambers instead of helium chambers. Harder to make, but not explosive (although implosive) and they would work better.

A helicopter propeller can hold maybe 6-7 tons? If your airship is made of light materials like fabrics, those could add up if you had many. But If your airship is metal, propellers would only be able to take a fraction off of the total weight.

know whats lighter than a helium tank?
a vacuum tank.

clearly we just need to find a super light and super durable material than maintains shape under an atmosphere of pressure.

what about the power source?
1.gasoline generator
2.steam engine
3.particle accelerator
4.nuclear reactor

a particle accelerator is a power source now? that's news to me.

In the world of Disney's Talespin? I think gasoline genereators and steam engines are good choices.

Try using Viktor Schauberger's repulsin for engines just to see if it works out.

Air ship sucks, period.  It is nothing but a big and slow target.  Best way to kill your enemy is to build cheap, fast and small object with lots and lots of explosive.

What about the kind of airships in Naussica, or Castle in the Sky????

Well, Nausicaa stuff is borderline doable, but still pretty damn big. Laputa stuff is just too damn big, except maybe you could create flying castle on small scale provided you had somesort of levitation engine.

Haven't you noticed that no form of transportation seriously used in the past 50 years has relied on density to stay in the air?
