Google's gamble

Name: Anonymous 2006-01-24 13:21

Hey guys.  This thread is about the recent google holdout.  what do you guys think of it?  Are they protecting us?  Do they have something to hide?  Do they disagree with the intended use of the information they would reveal (making porn harder for minors to get on the internet)?  or is there another reason they're not giving the U.S. govt. their information?

They are just exercing their right, and protecting the user's privacy, which is a thing we should admire.

I don't particularly want the government knowing about all the porn I download.

Of course, the gov't was asking about specific query sources.  They simply wanted aggregate data and certain terms.

I admire Google's willingness to "stand up to the man," but unless I read the actual federal request myself and that leads me to agree with Google, I'm tending towards siding with the gov't on this.

There are more important battles for Google to spend political capital on.  Like patent law.

And, for >>2's sake, I'd drop this one under a social science umbrella.

Google's stated reason is the protection of trade secrets (their search protocols.)

And if you want proof of the fact that they don't really care about our rights or privacy, just look at the case of Google in China. They agreed to censor and filter all results in China in order to be able to operate there.

Don't change these.
