The decline of western invention

Name: Anonymous 2005-07-29 16:51

Could it be that Asian companies, Eruopean companies and mostly all companies not in the US or North America for that reason have tried to expand technology, science and/or math? I mean this could be due to the outsourcing of american software and technology companies. Could we see nothing but a decline in the Computer Science and Electrical Eingneering field in America? Could we see all of the newist technology and inventions coming from other countries then this? Will we not see the fields of programming and computers which were so potent in the 1970's - 90's become so great again? Could this cause a new yellow peril? Are schools to blame for this? Or is the computer field in america being left behind because there is not enough money to be made in that field?

Discuss.

I think it's somewhat actual, but also largely a problem of popular perception.  You would have to talk in much, much greater detail about who's doing what, who owns what, and who's making what.  America was certainly a brain drain on Europe in the postwar era, but that may be reversing (thanks Bush).  A few things are clear: China is MAKING the shit, and we're EATING the shit.  We turn out the lawyers, and they turn out the electrical engineers.  All of this is a lot of generalized bull until details are pinned down, however.

Look, if we got a president that cared about our own fucking country, maybe we'd be advancing further.

Name: Anonymous 2005-07-29 23:32

America is inventing the shit. China is just making it, for now.

Why can't we be making it ourselfs? Why is there such a decline in jobs in america? What happend to America's DIY perspective? Have we all gotten lazy or has big business decied that a 5 year old child in taiwan (that's who makes alot of our shit)making our pants that we were is much better then paying a person who would probably do a better quality job in making these products? I also look at it though is that alot of kids graduating from the China university do not have alot of job oppertunaties and have to go to korean companies to get a job. I saw a special on it on korean TV were some of the males are doing female work as in house keeping because work is scarce there. So it's all contradicting each other. Provide more jobs here but lessen the jobs in other countries that might need it. So, outsourceing is basically going to continue in taiwan because slave labor is cheap labor. But we are talking about material objects like clothing and other shit not technology. I mean all your controllers, mouses, keyboards and other shit was made by a 5 to 10 taiwan or chinese male or female which is sickening. If not by children then by adults or teenagers put into a factory which has horrible conditions and can be comparied to the early factories of America. See the industrial revolution. I mean has America gotten so lazy that they don't want to make their own shit anymore? I mean when is the last technological advancement made here? We just launched a space shuttle for what? To get to the moon where we have been so many fucking times? To repair the space station so it can just rot all over again? I mean have we really made any advancements into exploring the other planets in our solar system? Will china be the first to mars? Or we will go to war with them so they won't? We are all just sitting idol while the rest of the world produces and invents. It's horrible what this united states have become. Being ruled by a christian monarchy and being ruled by money.

Mr EZLN, you are horribly misinformed. China can be expected to have substandard labor laws, but Taiwan is a newly developed country.

And, no, most assembly line jobs can probably be performed ably by trained monkeys. The tasks are very simple, and a 50 year old American red neck will not be able to do it more efficiently.

This facts that you have put forth I take without rebuttle. But let's see what the US is doing about these laws that china made:
http://www.nlcnet.org/campaigns/archive/chinareport/table_of_contents.shtml
http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2003/1/8/191237.shtml
Apong further study I have found that Taiwan has a growing industry of computer products and parts but including this Taiwan has created many sweat shops in central america. Even if it is a newly developed country it's former owners would not show the country how to work and how to create jobs but also how to use slave labor.
http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=37
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines01/0815-02.htm
We can also see many refugee groups being forced into sex and slave labor like that of the hmong people in China and Lao in Thailand:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4724199.stm
Indiginous people have always been prosecuted by the modern soceity or their invaiders:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples
We see this in history
British/Spanish invaiders and American Natives
Spanish and the distrution of the Aztecs and Mayans by claming themselfs as false gods
China and Japan and their conquests to Taiwan, Korea and Thiland
The British/German/French and Dutch and prosecution of native Africans
All can be seen if you just study history which some people found themself too lazy to try and find the answers them selfs.
Also, if the assembly line jobs are so easy we are we not doing them? It could be becuase the jobs are being replaced by robots but what about clothing making? If it's so god damn easy, what are we not doing it ourselfs and opening new jobs for people to do?

Correction: Even if it is a newly developed country it's former owners would it's owners not show the country how to work and how to create jobs but also how to use slave labor?

To go back to the original topic, I agree with >>3 statement. Our president cares more about money and oil then he does about expanding our Science, Technology and Mathematics programs. Our space program is constantly in a race with another country who is developing technology quicker then us because the leader put more and more money into that specific program and many others to increase the intellegence and the living of many in that country. The discovery of the right way to cure AIDS still hasn't produced new news except the fact that people are asking for more money while the scientist employed by the government are actually using this money to make better and more efficiant killing machines. According to this document http://www.iavi.org/viewfile.cfm?fid=30892 that in 2005 the public sector (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_sector) of the US spent $568 million on the search for a preventive vaccination of HIV. There are problems facing trying to find a HIV vaccine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV_vaccine). Alot of money has been put into the educational progam and since 2003 there was only a 9.9% drop out rate. Science studied in our high schools are just of the norm and most students who learn science in high school do not find it intreging. Chemistry is another quest because it is somewhat popular amongist the educated drug crowed and people who find it interresting but this is also down played by many people who do not like mathimatics. Mathimatics is also unpopular with high school students who just don't get it. Now to blame all of this for the reduction of time from the finding of a HIV vaccine is preposterous in the fact that you cannot blame everything on education or lack there off. There could also be a theory where the reason the vaccine for HIV is being witheald is because the government wants to decrease the population of Gays, Drug Addicts, and ethnic races not consisting of caucasian. See that there is such a epidemic of AIDS in the gay community and in Africa. Also, with many other races including white. So one theory is that AIDS is being used for ethinc clensing but this theory is just that, a theory. I will discuss other topics later..

Generally, the point of sanctioning child labor and related is the fact, that A: it makes stuff cheaper, so your average consumerist whore can buy more useless things, and B: it's not quite right to discriminate against countries that are less socialistic.

It's child labor or poverty, in many cases, substandard workers or starvation. You can argue that "they should go back to their former lifestyles", but quite often, there is nothing to go back to.

Name: Anonymous 2005-08-01 20:39

I am not discriminating, I am just talking about were most commsumer products come from.

>>1
NO.

That's about the short of it.
Any inventions worth thier time have generally been built up over time and use many ideas from many places. Things like CDs and Photography are good examples, they weren't just thought up overnight by some guy, they were evolutions of many people in many different countries. Though there were 'advancements' made in each country that stepped it up for the next and so fourth.

>Or is the computer field in america being left behind because there is not enough money to be made in that field?

I can only hypothesize about why the field is losing a large amount of people. First, it's not because of the lack of money, but because of the lack of 'easy money' that was so prevalent in the earlier decades. There are also problems such as trying to find 'comfortable' jobs that pay decently rather than spending 40-80k on a degree and then getting shafted for 20k a year job by companies who don't know shit. Also, there are a lot of people who don't like computers 'that way.' There are a lot of people who don't know what computer science is all about, and that's the problem.
