John Carmack was to 3D gaming what Isaac Newton was to calculus. He laid out the foundation and made his work publicly available for others to learn from. The state of video games are well past the last big breakthrough. There's nothing left to do but write more code and throw more hardware at it. In that sense, there will not be a next John Carmack of video games.
