If you want to be a programmer in the games industry, it's good to know things like C++, OpenGL and SDL, and probably a scripting language like Lua. But, realistically, your knowledge of Computer Science needs to be at BSc level at the very least. As another poster alluded to, working in game dev is very demanding compared to other software engineering fields, and probably not as fun as you might imagine.

If you want to just make games as a hobby, try looking at a tool like Gamemaker. It's available on Steam and you can use a basic version for free. It has a graphical interface for designing games but you can also jump in and play with the code if you want. Some recent and very successful independent games, like Hotline Miami and Gunpoint, have been developed using Gamemaker.

Game developers at big companies are not programmers.
Programmers do engine development and build their websites.
Artists, writers, and level designers actually make the games.
As an engine programmer you won't have anything to do with that

Use GLFW.
Anyway, game programming is pretty fun, you just need to know calculus pretty well.
Knowing the math though is much less useful than having a keen intuition for doing arithmetic, because without that, you'll be sitting around trying to think things out and it just won't click, scaling vectors and shit.

What do you need to know calculus for? You're not gonna be integrating or solving any diff eqs for anything.

Optimization, vector shit, not looking like a stupid ass for trying to make useful things without being able to understand the simplest of all advanced maths.

And most importantly, be sure to check 'em.

what kind of optimization?
>vector shit
not calculus
