What's the best/most common technology to save stuff into a database?

At work, we use asp.net. That's what I'm most comfortable with, but I can't use it for my private websites.
So I tried PHP and I just don't like it. I think it's ugly and tedious to work with.

What would you recommend?

Sucking a cock or two usual helps me with these kinds of problems.
