I read the stories on slashdot, but just like youtube I try to not read the comments.
El Reg is superior.

I think I remember a time when /. was actually a place to go for news and commentary.  But maybe my memory is failing me.

As a site gets more popular, its content become closer to the lowest common denominator.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-27 4:56

Which is why /. is full of macfags?

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-27 5:11

sometime around 2006 or so, the placed filled up fast with liberal hipster mac-toting scum.

Slashdot isn't the place to go for news (unless you do not visit other news websites). You visit Slashdot to learn from the insight and opinions of experts in the various fields.

Except that Slashdot doesn't have any experts? It has youtube grade comments made by fanboys

Now, sure.  It wasn't always like that.  I think.

I visited from around 2005, to 2008 when I got fed up and left. The community lacked all self-awareness as for the reach of their competency, as is common in geek-oriented websites, so you saw entirely uninformed speculation on Biology or Law related articles, and the most deafening silence when it came to Mathematics, at which the audience knew well that they sucked.

As for programming, it was made up of people who thought that C's pointers were the ultimate abstraction and the bar against which programmers must be measured, and who thought that Perl sucked and FIOC ruled, as those three were about the only languages they knew, along Java, which was cool to hate. Some knew enough to namedrop LISP (in all caps), fewer yet had ever written a line of code in it, knowledge of anything farther from the mainstream was non-existent, nor could the go much further in depth when it came to the shit they did know.

I left there and never looked back. I'm sure I'm not missing much, to be had.

why is this

Quite frankly, I don't know. I may be being overly harsh with geek websites, given that if you read the comments in e.g. newspapers sites, where just about any jackoff goes and comments, it's just as uninformed, but whereas the comments made by random idiots on the net are just short spurts of drivel, geek comments are full of the authority bestowed upon you by thousands of half-memorized, unrelated facts, and the full confidence they have that you are, in fact, misunderstood genius, each and every one of them.

Don't forget the deepseated resentment of anyone who might be more interesting. 5yo invents cold fusion powered Jew killing virus? `Bah, they just looked that up online. I was writing way cooler ANSI Sepples compilers when I was twelve years old!'. Researchers cure cancer and AIDS with a single $0.10 pill? `This was totally obvious! If I weren't so busy with my thrilling life as an assistant manager at Denny's, I would have invented this years ago.' Someone sends malaria vaccinations to Africa? `What those smelly niggers need is a computer with a crank on it and wifi on blimps so they can access the English wikipedia and learn how to make their own.'

It's so pathetic.

If you want more details and our opinions on this eggwing influx, or just another place to have more serious discussion, check Tabitha Catherine's Lounge. Some of us are posting there, and some guy even made a draft for a new TeXcode (like Sexpcode but with everything TeX).
