I think he is playing a legal trick here, to get out sooner, and invalidate some things. Most ex DoD officers in special operations change their name, some even sex, to detach themselves as references. It is still a common practice in Operations (Ops), to have more than one name and identity. It is even more important when you leave the field. I'd have to look at the specifics, but the easier method is to just ask the counsel.
