Tanenbaum says Linux is crap

because the bigger is OS the less reliable it is.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-01 11:43

Le Linux is not le OS
Linux is a bloated and shitty monolithic kernel

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-01 11:46

Linux bloated ?
Go tell that to Micro$oft.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-01 11:49

He is German. 100% Aryan. His parents operated a private concentration camp.

Size of OS doesn't matter, Linux is written in C, which has "unsafe, undefined behavior" by default.
The larger a C program is, the probability of "unsafe, undefined behavior" increases.
If there was a type-safe, non-GC C-alternative which had the speed of C, Linux could be rewritten.

which had the speed of C
le speed is made be le language XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Users and programmers care about performance and memory.
You can write a slow toy OS for yourself though. No one stopping you.

irony: minix 3 creater using windows

He can't even start an IRC session to prove there's a **lot** of people working on MIMIX 3.

My personal opinion, is poor documentation, and poor QA testing. If you look at the FreeBSD source code, you will not see that, it will be readable, and comprehensible. And there is more than source of documentation that describe a particular section that you are looking at, that it is hard to get lost.

Strange, MIMIX is too, with ASM, And so is FreeBSD, OpenSolaris, Plan9, anything on this list:

Duh, everybody already knows Linux is shit.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-01 13:35

Holy shit, he's a New Yorker? I was expecting a gay Europeon accent.

Also, if his OS is so much better than Linux, why is he presenting his slideshow on Windows XP?

I know, he should be using a Mac!

Let me explain.
Imagine T.Davis was bit more sane and spend his time on improving his OS instead of posting on forums.
Now imagine T.Davis got some support. You still have a toy OS but "its something" between a full-fledged OS and pet project. Thats the stage of Minix. He has to use winXP because Minix isn't capable of much. Its programs are ancient. It has no recent drivers.

XP is running under emulator just for the sake of slideshow software.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanenbaum%E2%80%93Torvalds_debate

Tanenbaum is one of those deluded academics who has gotten out of touch with reality, severely. Most users do NOT care about (nor want!) absolute reliability or security (the latter leading to "trusted" computing and that DRM shit).

For academics grant money is pretty easy to get... you just have to brainwash them into believing.

Also, i wonder what quality of drivers vendors will put out if you can "restart a driver everytime it fails".

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-02 5:26

Also, i wonder what quality of jet engines vendors will put out if you can "eject with a parachute everytime it stalls".

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-02 5:49

Also, i wonder what quality of posts /prog/riders will put out if you could "delete own posts and threads if they fail to meet expectations"
