So now I'm thinking 6.034 would be fun to do online

Then it's not a good book for you. You're supposed to have basic notions about (differential) calculus, some discrete math and of course basic computer science methods such as recursion.

In that case, yes, SICP is very relevant since it's more abstract than a lot of intro courses that concentrate on teaching a specific language rather than general programming concepts.
