I guess you're the ones who could answer this the best, what particular proficiency in programing has made Carmack so popular in the videogame industry?
Refrain from bland answers such as "He coded doom and doom is good" if possible.
>>1
He and other id Software employees pioneered important graphics programming techniques.
>>3
Carmack has almost nothing to do with this fast IEEE 754 single precision inverse square root approximation algorithm.

No, do your research before spouting nonsense.
OpenGL was originally a more portable specification of IrixGL, then it was taken on by the OpenGL Architecture Review Board. Altough id Software is a member of the ARB, most of the OpenGL specification effort has come from SGI, 3Dlabs and GPU vendors.
Being autistic and obsessed with optimization. Also, being proficient in mathematics, particularly complex 3-dimensional calculations and extensive knowledge of how x86 PCs work at the hardware level.
Fucking doomfaggots, doom was always shit. Enjoy your shitty carbon copy paintover of wolfenstein while I enjoy the superior gameplay of based Quake.

John Carmack is regarded as a genius and hacker G-d by everybody who has worked with him. He's well known for being able to produce more code than the rest of his team combined. The code he produces is consistently of substantially better quality than that of his colleagues. Finally, he has contributed much of that code to open source.
