CS degree isn't that important. Most people enroll to Universities, because they want jobs in science. And you cant get a science job without friends at university and peer-reviewed papers behind you. The only reason to buy a degree is so that you can formally call yourself an engineer (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulation_and_licensure_in_engineering)
