secure install

I'd like to have a secure install of some operating system on my laptop. I am not sure where to start. OS is not very important, I have either fBSD or gentoo in mind, even though I'm not so much of a power user. Truecrypt for disk encryption? Recently with the snowden craze there's been some information about securely browsing the web, even though this is not my primary concern.
