Alternative Computational Model

So I've come across this term quite a bit lately, and I'm not entirely sure what the term means.

The only thing I can gather is that it's a break from the imperative model, which is basically sequential execution.

So does it just mean anything that allows for non-sequential execution, like a state machine for example?

But imperative programs can have branches, why do you consider those sequential but not state transitions?
