They were kind of forced to do that by the fact that Java in the browser is now always one of:
1. Unsupported
2. Disabled for security reasons
3. A non-Sun/Oracle implementation that doesn't support any version of Java newer than about 1995.
4. Outdated and full of security holes
5. Up to date and full of security holes
6. Running in a VM and slow as fuck
