Using C++ POSIX in Windows

Name: Anonymous 2013-04-28 16:17

Is there a way to write a POSIX prog in Windows that's cross compatible with Linux, or should I just not even bother and write it all in Linux anyway?

There's always cygwin, but get yourself a real Unix not that loonix crap.

Maybe with some include guards?

Don't start with that 'real UNIX' shit again

Fine, how I change it to "POSIX compliant OS"? Because that rules out most Linux distros, too.

Only for 7 Enterprise/Ultimate editions, though.

Are your only options if you want your source to be 100% clean. The only alternative is to write your own application-specific abstraction layer for every operation you need.

If you can keep all your compatibility #define's in a header you may be okay, but I find anything non-trivial will end up requiring an #ifdef in code flow sooner or later. And there be dragons...

Keep in mind that you will also need to limit yourself to C89 if you want your source to be buildable with MSVC. Last I checked, mingw-gcc's performance was not very good (Cygwin will be right out if you care about performance at all).

They're actually not bad, but clang is much better (and also available on cygwin). At least they all have much better compatibility with the current C standard than MSVC. And whatever you do, don't ever use fork().
