And you got the context wrong, he was refering to the evolution of languages that normally start all powerful and useful and then they start adding safety measures, but they aren't enough (which is a whole problem on today's multicore world)

In case haskell started with a solid fundation and safety but no much performance, it's more it didn't have a sane IO mechanism until 96' and wasn't performant enought until 2000 (type class wasn't that trivial back then)
