Right. I figured out why there are problems. GTalk seems to let you appear "offline", where that isn't actually supported in standard XMPP, or at least, not on my client.

So the jabber transport won't update the subscription status until you come online. If you have problems messaging me now, since I tried to re-request authorization, just come online temporarily.
