Spaces always appear the same as long as one is using a monospace font, while tabs may appear different to different editors. If someone were to program with a non-monospace font, they'd be more inclined to use tabs because spaces wouldn't be lined up, and therefore inclined to believe tabs would magically line up for others as well.
Of course this only matters if you want others to be able to decipher your code. In a work setting, one should instead try to write the code as ugly as possible.
