Campus bookstores will usually let you return within a day or two. So buy it, spend a night scanning the whole book, and return it in the morning. Do this at a campus bookstore only. Those are the ones who deserve to be ripped off.

I just go to a university library. They're supposed to check for an ID card, but they just assume I'm a student there. I'm even on first name terms with some of the staff.
