Well?

its what Java would have become if Sun was still around. Martin Ordersky wrote the javac compiler for Sun

So it's good? I hope so. I had reasonable performance (just a tad bit slower than Java7) and better syntax. It has good libraries and it's fairly respected in a formal working environment (as opposed to Haskell). I think it's the language I've been looking for. Haskell would have been my preference, btw but cabal ruined my plans before they were ever formed so fuck it. Scala it is.

I would use it if ever forced to develop for the JVM. It's nice to macros in it.

In Scala you basically have to do a compromise between prettiness and performance. It is possible to write about as fast Scala as Java, but you basically end up writing Java then. Eg. Scala's for-loops are slow as shit so all the code in benchmarksgame is written with while-loops even though for-loops would be more idiomatic Scala.

That's a shame.

I have to use Java for my Software Engineering II course so I thought I could finally use some excuse to replace Java with Scala (and learn a new language along the way), but I was going to use performance as one of the excuses. Looks like I'll have to make up something else before I'm forced to use JAVABEANS WEB FRAMEWORKS.
