An actual programming thread

I want to start programming with OpenGL I know C++. Is OpenGL good for basic games? like a side scroller or a top down or like a roguelike game?

You can do 2D games in OpenGL but you still have to think about it in 3D space. Better just to use a simple 2D library like SDL (which handles other things besides graphics as well).
