I'd say you're quite right about that since he repeatedly confuses the Web with email. Along with that, he's not really clear about what he means by 'plain text'. If he's talking specifically about something like ASCII in comparison with UTF-8, then I'd agree that people should adopt UTF-8 in the place of ASCII since it's compatible with it. On the other hand, if he's talking about mixing Web standards like HTML with Email, then I'd strongly disagree. The Web is already a mess due to standards that people can't agree on and accept (look at discussions related to the introduction of the video tag in HTML5 for an example of this). Why push that burden onto email?
