it's wrong to measure mental health with social norms. in acient greece homosexuality was ok (and cross-dressing too btw) then it suddenly became mental disorder and then it again become mostly ok. i read that doctors were basically forced to claim that homosexualty isn't a disorder in any way. human psychic doesn't work that way, it is deeper than social norms

in ussr in like 60's-70's people could be placed in a madhouse for being political dissidents. obviously they didn't meet certain social norms in a way that had a notable effect on themselves or others, so, ussr authorities were completely right according to you
