It's fine as long as they're tasteful. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a big part of nerd pop culture and the books are great (well, the first three).

Programmers and scientists occasionally using 42 or catchphrases from the book as placeholder values is fine. It's the teenagers who endlessly parrot that shit that really get to me.
