sam uses regular expressions in combination with text manipulation commands to make the most powerful editor that is like doing everything with macros.

I loved Plan 9 and I even liked its Blit-style interface, but I hated the over-reliance on the mouse in sam and acme. We all have mice now and everyone still uses vi* or emacs with a keyboard.

The only people who still like that shit are cat-v/suckless hipsters.

acme is the dummy editor in Plan 9 for giving people a smalltalk like graphical interface. sam is the serioius programmers editor that does not use a mouse at all

I installed CentOS in a VM a while back, my first Linux experience in a couple of years.  My face when it didn't come with ed in the base install, so I had to fumble around with vi.

Also, CentOS doesn't come with vi by default. It comes with Vim, which lacks a number of basic vi features.

And I typed vi and got an editor, so that's close enough for me.  All I know is ESC, i, :wq, and hjkl, so it's not like I would be able to tell the difference.

Thank you for converting me to the glorious sam, /prog/. I though ed was the best editor but I was wrong.

The fun thing about sam is that you can use Vim exactly the same way. Highlight with the mouse, run a :command with the keyboard.
