You don't work in the real world at all. $1k is chump change for a real business. One of my clients was running a self-installed ecommerce site with code from 2003 because it was CHEAP and FAST - any time he needed work done to the site, he had oDesk Indians ready and willing, FAST and CHEAP. When I need other coders, I hire people who get shit done. Clients want their site to run, the polish can come later. The fortress-building is a process of best practices and lessons learned.
