Making an OS

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-28 4:00

Next year I am going to school for Electrical Engineering and I want to spend the time before then becoming a better programmer.

I have taken a few CSc courses over the last couple of years and dabbled in Python, Java, ARM assembly, C, C#, and C++. I have worked on and completed a few projects related to my interests, such as an alarm clock programmed in assembly and a simple real-time object recognition application using OpenCV.

For my next project I want to write a very basic OS and I was wondering if /prog/ could suggest any good primers for someone trying this for the first time. Thanks!

I've heard that Notch (yes, the Minecraft guy) is making a virtual 16bit CPU for his next game and the PC probably could use a decent OS :3
