/prog/ never really had an exceptionally strong opinion on women before misogyny became a Reddit meme.
Look at the early threads about Leah: they're obviously not exactly friendly, but they're not nearly as infantile as the current bullshit. They're full of edgy sexual jokes, but they attack Leah, not explicitly all women.

``lel be friendly please XD''
The things Reddit has been in the news for recently:

1. /r/jailbait coverage on Anderson Cooper and outrage after pedophiles and their subreddits got.
2. /r/creepshots, which didn't even get banned until days after even the BBC covered the story (and its dozens of offspring subreddits still haven't been).
3. Rising up to defend a literal pedophile sex offender and crying about how he got fired from his job after Gawker (and the NYT and the BBC) published his real name.

Reddit believes some ridiculous things about itself, but even they no longer have any illusions that they're a welcoming, inoffensive community.
Racial slurs (at least, ``nigger'' and ``kike'') get you banned from Stormfront. Any subreddit trying to ban them would be seen as lhitlerally worse than SRS.
