Humans colonise Mars, and create self-sustaining settlements but without the ability for advanced construction. Earth is at some point destroyed by thermonuclear war, and the colonists on Mars are left stranded. In time strife grows, and they split into two camps, users of emacs and vi. Through generations, the knowledge of earth is gradually forgotten and RMS is worshipped as a god by some in the FSF pantheon, while others deny them as heretics and prepare to end it once and for all.
