Here's my theory on how to make a Horcrux. It's so graphic, no Harry Potter fansite will accept it, but I'm pretty sure it's right. So here goes.
First is a quote from J.K. Rowling herself off of Pottercast:
"I see [making a Horcrux] as a series of things you would have to do. So, you would have to perform a spell. But you would also- I don't even know if I want to say it out loud. I know that sounds funny, but I did really think it through. There are two things I think that are too horrible, actually, to go into detail about. One of them is how Pettigrew brought Voldemort back into a rudimentary body. 'Cause I told my editor what I thought happened there and she looked as though she was gonna vomit. And then the other thing is how you make a Horcrux."
So the big question is, what's this mysterious act that was so bad it was worse than self-mutilation and so bad that JKR couldn't even put it in the books?
I think that this points to the fact that Voldemort is a psychopathic sexual sadist and that this unspeakable act in the Horcrux-making process is some sort of sex act.
The Horcruxes themselves are already analogous to the trophies that some serial killers take from their victims to preserve the feeling of the kill (except they're obviously used for a more literal immortality). Many serial killers take this a step further and use the thrill of a kill for their own twisted sexual desires (masturbating next to the body, having sex with the body, etc.) Not only does it continue the obvious comparison between Voldemort and serial killers, but it definitely fits the bill of being one of the few things worse than self-mutilation.
So the steps to Horcrux creation are this:
1) Commit a murder to split your soul.
2) Reach a point of complete ecstasy to prepare your soul (i.e. via some sort of sex act).
3) Cast the spell that takes part of your split-soul and seals it in an object.
It's more likely masturbation next to the body than sex with it, since the Muggle police would've noticed if Tom Riddle Senior's body had been violated. Young Tom Riddle could've easily cleaned up the "evidence" using Evanesco.
Plus, even though Voldemort can't feel love, he has mentioned that he understands sexual desire, and assumed that was all that Snape felt towards Lily.
And that's my theory.
