Server-side language

Hello, everyone.

This year I have a coursework. I should write a server for a computer game. Now I decide what language I use.

I have been programming on Java for four three already and I like it, but I don't want to restrict my intellection.

I was offered Ruby and Python, but I don't realy like them (change my mind).
I would try Scala or Erlang, but I heared they are realy hard to study.

What language could you recomend me and why?
What language can give me more profit and experience?
Or maybe it's better to use Java?

P.S. Please, do not offer me .Net languages.

2) AWK/Sed and KSH93 for Server side, or stick to cgic
3) Do not play with Java, period. And try not using OOP.

Scala isn't hard, and is a decent language. If you want to use Java, don't. Better go with Scala.

try node. it's the first system i've used that had a decent api for network programs. Everything else has this giant object oriented gobbledygook.

the udp module is 300 lines of code. it works on windows flawlessly too.

If you don't like javascript, try Go or C.
