A nice article, which uncovers the scale of Jewish participation in slave trade.
In Europe, the slave trade was almost exclusively Jewish business. Slaves came mainly from the East Slavic lands. Bishop Agobard of Lyons (IX century. AD) mentions in his book "De insolentia Iudaeorum" a number of cases, where the Jews stole Christian children, or even purchased children of poor Christians for future re-sale to the Spanish Muslims.
With the slave trade is connected, apparently, the resettlement of Jews in the city of Magdeburg [Caro, Wirtschaftsgeschichte, I, p.191]. During the transportation of slaves the slave-trade was taxed by the Germans: for example, the customs codex of the city of Koblenz required on each head of a slave 4 dinars, while the bishop of the city of Hur in Switzerland levied 2 dinars per slave at the outpost in Vallenshtadte. The X century Prague was the center of the slave trade. In 989 Saint Adalbert resigned from bishopship of Prague, because he was unable to redeem all Christians, held by a Jewish slavetrader, [Caro, Wirtschaftsgeschichte, I, p.191].
Jewish merchants brought the Slavic slaves to Muslim countries. Women and girls were meant concubines for harems, while young men, after castration, served as eunuchs. According to the laws of Islam, the Muslims are prohibited doing castration, so this procedure was done by the Jewish doctors. The medieval Arab historian al-Muqaddasi writes that the main supplier of white eunuchs in Muslim harems were "Slavs, the country which lies behind the Khorezm, they are being castrated, and then moved to Egypt."
Slavs were taken to the Spanish cities, inhabited by the Jews, who castrated them. Jews in the empire of Franks also practiced castration, with a special reputation enjoyed in this respect were the Jews of Verdun [Dozy, Gesch. der Mauren, 2, p.38] About this specific operation of castration testifies the medieval Arab historian Ibn al-Athir: "During the castration scrotum is cut out and the testicles are remove. Often during this operation, the boy is frightened and one testicle goes up. The jewish-doctor is searching for the testicle, but the search is not always successful, and this testicle descends only when the cut is healed. If it's the left testicle, then the eunuch would retain libido and sperm, but if it is right, eunuch would retain face hair, "[Ibn al-Athir, IX, p. 39]. Only a small part of the slaves survived after such an operation, but the survivors were very expensive. [That is, in modern language, for the Jews it was a very good business].
