Proxy checking

What is the best way to check a proxy from the command line (bash shell)?
I've tried proxycheck but can't seem to get it to work. I have known good proxies it fails to return the right status for.

I got help from another forum anyway, turns out you can use the -e flag in whet to export http_proxy. A bit of awk fiddling and it's easily automated.
