Newfags these days! Sage is used to reply to a thread without bumping it. It can be used by entering sage into the email field of your post. Once a thread reaches its reply limit after a lot of posts it can no longer be bumped and will begin to fall to the last page until it no longer exists. Once a thread reaches its reply limit all posts will automatically sage even though you see no proof of it in the email field, this is called auto-sage.

I know what sage is and how it's used on the imageboard and /jp/, but on /prog/ it's used differently. I'm not asking for a technical description of sage, but for /prog/'s cultural etiquette regarding sage.

sage is the way you can reply to a thread without bumping the thread to the top of the thread list. You use it if you want to contribute a post without bumping a thread.

sage is a polite way of saying your post is not worth bumping the thread. Basically, you want to shitpost and you don't want to bump the thread and excite some fine gentleman who was eagerly waiting for a serious response in this slow textboard.
