Newcomer to Programming

Name: Anonymous 2012-07-11 18:38

Hey /prog/, I took a Java class about 5 years ago, but my programming ability is horrible. I'm taking a C++ class and my professor is having us use Dev-C++. Is there anything good or bad that I should know about this text editor?

Also, are there any recommended readings (aside from SICP) for a newcomer such as myself?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Read SICP.

It's a shit IDE. Learn to use Emacs.

Dev-C++ is an IDE, not a text editor.

If your the course doesn't explicitly require Dev-C++, I recommend you switch to Microsoft Visual C++.

Thanks, I better understand the difference between a text editor and IDE now. I don't know the technical advantages or disadvantages between Emacs and MS Visual C++ or any other IDE, but I know you guys like Stallman and freedom. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

This is not /g/. I suggest you go back.

Dev-C++ is not a compiler.

I already asked them and nobody replied. I figured programming questions were best suited for /prog/. I'm sorry that I have offended you in some way. Was it the comment about Stallman? I did not know /prog/ felt differently about him.

/prog/ isn't suited for anything, all the former inhabitants
of the lisp arts have turned into anus trolls.

You are no longer in 4chan. The text boards are part of w4ch.

Can you compile whatever you're making in Code::Blocks? If yes, use C::B. VS2010 is slow as hell, but has a nicer debugger.

Freetard here. VSE2008 is the best IDE of all time.

A horrid platform and a horrid IDE to match the horrid language.

Dev-C++is horribly outdated and shit. I don't think it's been updated in about 7 years. If on Windows, get Code::Blocks with MinGW.

This is kind of a good idea, since I thought the 3D feature was pointless, but

Its actually bad luck to do this
