The truth is that freedom is not free and no one would give rights to people who dont fight for them. Even the freedom to pick an employer and specialization is a right in itself, else you have been a serf, like in middle ages (and the communism is the middle ages).

The difference between Roman Empire and the Middle Ages is that during middle ages almost everyone was a slave (beside the leaders of the Church), while the ideology of Christianity was used to justify the slavery. I.e. Christiants live just to die and go to "heaven", so they dont need any rights or property here on earth
