Write your own or use something like Radare.
The lack of documentation for .idb, no undo function, and not-very-configurable analysis engine turned me off IDA a long time ago, even without considering its proprietary nature.

buy it or stick to demo/older versions. Or kindly ask for the binary and crack it yourself. =]

Your opinion will change once you encounter a corrupt .idb file, discover that the format is not backwards-compatible, or wish that its analysis engine would do something more intelligent and/or let you have more control over the process.
