It's actually pretty harmful, healthy ears get rid of earwax automatically (the skin inside the ear canal is constantly growing outwards!), when you remove it yourself the ear gets irritated, not only by your cleaning, but also by dust, cold/hot air, insects and all other stuff earwax normally protects it from, and secretes even more earwax, also begins to itch etc.
So cleaning your ears is a bit like using opiates: the more you do it, the more you need to do it, until you overdose.
Not to mention that each time you clean your ears you push some earwax deeper, from where it can't be automatically evacuated.
