RMS is full of shit

Name: Anonymous 2012-01-28 20:39

Some people want money, some people want credit, he wants to spread his ideologies, and frankly, I don't see the difference.

Name: Anonymous 2012-01-28 20:42

Yeah, but like RMS is really really smart. Don't believe it? Look up Harvard Math 55 on Wikipedia. Read the description and then look at the famous people that took this class. RMS is listed as one of those people.

I never doubted it.

One of those famous people is Bill Gates.

So your comment only highlights what >>1 said.

That's why you'll forever be a mental midget. Why do you imply that these things are equal?

Name: Anonymous 2012-01-29 10:29

RMS is a commie. Modern day Karl Marx.

This might mean that the dude has probably given some thought into his BS.

>>1 With money, you only benefit yourself. With getting credit, you only benefit yourself. Spreading an idea that you think would help people and the humanity in general, do you only benefit yourself?

Name: Anonymous 2012-01-29 12:15

>> The intention is not the same. He wants to spread his idea not for getting personal advantage, but for helping humanity. You couldn't say the same thing about people who only wants money or credit.

I don't care who he's doing it for, all I care about is my own personal freedom. Copyleft is a way of forcing your cause on someone else, just like any other kind of copyright.

Name: Anonymous 2012-01-29 18:40

>>10 Absolutely no.

With copyleft, you are free to do everything, but you aren't free to take the freedom of others. That's the only thing you can't do.

So you care only about your own personal freedom, you don't give a shit for others... ok, it's good to know.

OP is a faggot.

Thread over.

Nope. When you distribute software, the user ought to have the right to study it and share it at will. By distributing proprietary software you require the users of your programs to be helpless and socially divided. You should not ask them to give up their freedom to do that.

Name: Anonymous 2012-01-29 20:40

The difference is altruism.

Users have a choice. BSD licensed source has greater valence than GNU licensed source. Any rational person would admit that.

I'm with >>10. Don't get me wrong, the GPL has its place, and the FSF has done wonders for us. Despite that, RMS is just plain rabid. When I read his comments about Jobs (not that I'm a fan of Jobs) I thought "funny, I was just thinking the same thing about you." I might not think that way if he hadn't taken it upon himself to meddle in certain projects, like glibc. Remember kids: if you sign away your rights (for "protection", ha!) to the FSF they will take you up on the offer.

The choice to restrict downstream users of their essential software freedoms is not a good choice. The point of the GPL isn't more freedoms, the point is about protecting the essential freedoms. The GPL would be redundant if software distributors respected their users' right to software freedom.
