Keeping Fresh

Hello /prog/. Don't normally come on these boards, but I have a relatively simple question that I think you could help me with.

I've finished my first semester of Comp Science, and learned a fair bit of Python programming in the process (not the best programming language, I know).

Basically, now that the class is over and I'm not being exposed to the Python language on a regular basis, I was wondering what /prog/ does to keep up to date on their programming knowledge? If anyone could suggest some projects to start on, or a database of sample problems to just do in spare time, I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise, just discuss what you do on a daily basis to maintain your knowledge.

I appreciate it.

Study new programming languages. Scala, Haskell, Perl6.

LISP is ooooold but it is a good way to learn new stuff (I.E., things that you don't learn on school)

That may be a good idea. I'm going to be getting into C next semester, and I may pick up Java just as a side project.

NOT JAVA

Java does not teach you anything new. Use Scala instead.

-1000 style points for thinking /prog/ deals with programming

-1000 style points for noko-ing your post, these aren't the image boards.

-1000 style points for slamming the only language you know

-1000 style points for the inevitable shitstorm saying "language ____ sucks"

-1000 style points for asking for programming exercises

-1000 style points for the jackasses that are about to referrence SICP because of you

-1000 style points for not trying to google shit for yourself

-1000 style points for newfaggotry

-1000 style points for expecting positive responses

-100 style points for getting me to type all this shit out

Congrats >>1 your style level is UNDER 9000!!!

Also... welcome to /prog/

Do a web service on bash, perl and c.

Do just one service, that returns the date and time of the machine. Do it on the 3 languages.

Later, change them so they return some data saved on a SQLite database.

I used to frequent /g/ until I came to the nasty realization that 50% of the users there are autistic assholes like you, who just slow discussion and make the board shit. The few times I've visited /prog/, I've noticed mostly the same thing.

For the other responses, thanks for your input. I'll be sure to look into Scala, and I may just get a jump start on C.

1. Read SICP
2. Read K&R
3. At this point you will know what you want to do next.

100% of us are like that :-)

I read research papers, books, study and learn new languages.
I recommend reading SICP, learning Haskell/ML, Scheme/a Lisp (not Clojure). Deciding what to do after is up to you, so just keep trying new things, both on the practical and theoretical sides of CS, until you find something that really interests you. By that time, you will hopefully have an informed general view of what CS is and does, and know how to write programs, too.

That's because most shitposters here come directly from /g/. Don't let the imageboards deceive you.

Went ahead and downloaded SICP, starting to read it now.

Thanks guys, I have plenty to work on now. I just wanted to know what the the general /prog/ community did to expand their knowledge on comp sci.

Enjoy your SICP. Also, don't skip the first two chapters or so, even if it seems trivial, coming from Python there's probably a lot to learn for you in there, and do the exercises.

You should also watch the lectures. They're truly awesome.

Yeah, except we are different autists.
